The Rottweiler is one of the oldest dog breeds, thought to originate from drover dogs used by the Roman legions in the 2nd century CE. When the Roman Empire collapsed in the 5th century CE, many of these dogs made their way to the town of Rottweiler in Germany. Rottweilers were used as guard dogs, butcher’s dogs, and draft dogs in the Middle Ages. Rottweilers served as messenger dogs, ambulance dogs, and draught dogs during World War I and World War II. In the early 20th century Rottweilers were brought to America and became popular family pets and working dogs.
