Exotic Shorthair was developed from the Persian cat as a short-haired breed. They are similar to Persians in many ways, including temperament and conformation, except for the short dense coat. The breed was developed in the United States in the 1950s by crossing Persian cats with American Shorthairs. The goal was to create a short-haired cat with the same physical characteristics and temperament as the Persian. The initially proposed name for the Exotic Shorthair breed was the “Sterling,” since the cats were supposed to be silver. However, the name was eventually changed to Exotic Shorthair because the breed was not limited to silver cats.
